Abstract
Este artículo presenta una explicación desde la demanda del empleo informal. Nuestra propuesta sostiene que es la desindustrialización prematura que aqueja a las economías en desarrollo la causa del empleo informal. Para soportar el argumento teórico, presentamos evidencia empírica usando datos de un grupo de economías de América Latina. Los resultados de nuestra estimación de panel indican que en efecto la desindustrialización prematura incide en el empleo informal. Para reducirlo, por lo tanto, una política enfocada a la re-industrialización debe ser implementada.
